Shakespeare
&
Autism
When I began my MFA journey at Ohio State University, I had no idea I would uncover a crucial piece of my identity. Discovering my neurodivergence has been the final piece of the puzzle. My original goal was to strengthen my acting skills, but I found a profound purpose in the Shakespeare & Autism Project. Developed by Kelly Hunter at the Royal Shakespeare Company, this initiative is grounded in the Hunter Heartbeat Method, a holistic approach that connects mind and body. By using the heartbeat—the first sound we all recognize—this method establishes a common language that fosters connection and encourages openness and play. Through engaging activities, music, and texts inspired by Shakespeare, Shakespeare & Autism creates a safe environment for individuals of all neurodivergent backgrounds to find connection through storytelling.
Shakespeare & Autism has made me a better artist and storyteller and a more empathetic citizen of the world.
Under the mentorship of Kevin McClatchy, Director of Shakespeare & Autism at OSU and Artist Laureate for the 2024-2025 academic year, I look forward to continuing my training via workshops around the Greater Columbus/Ohio area. I aim to introduce this beautiful work to the spaces I have the privilege of engaging with professionally and artistically.
